They found that some healthcare providers were better than others at helping patients lower their blood pressure. The winners? Pharmacists and community health workers! While doctors and nurses did a great job too, pharmacists and community health workers seemed to have the most success.

This makes sense because these providers often have more time to chat with patients and develop personalized plans to manage their conditions. It’s especially helpful in areas where people might have trouble affording care or getting to frequent appointments. So, if you’re looking for ways to keep your blood pressure in check, these might be the healthcare providers to talk to.

Blood pressure can require more time to manage than is often available in primary care visits. Having someone lead an effort who doesn’t have the same time constraints may be the most effective approach.” – Katherine Mills, lead author, associate professor and vice chair of epidemiology at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine

The study dug deeper into the numbers. On average, people who worked with pharmacists saw their blood pressure number (systolic) go down by 7.3 points. Those who worked with community health workers saw a 7.1-point drop. It’s worth noting that these are just averages, and reductions for doctors and nurses were still between 2 and 3 points. Pharmacists and community health workers also seemed to be the best at lowering the blood pressure number (diastolic).

The researchers weren’t surprised that all the healthcare providers helped, but they did think pharmacists might have an advantage. They pointed out that figuring out the right medications and dosages can be tricky, sometimes requiring multiple doctor visits. Pharmacists, with their medication expertise, seem to be a good fit for this challenge. The researchers mentioned it can be tough for some patients to keep going back and forth to the doctor, so having a pharmacist involved could be a real timesaver.

The study doesn’t downplay the importance of teamwork in managing high blood pressure. Dr. Fine, a heart health expert, emphasizes that doctors, pharmacists, and community health workers can all be valuable teammates. This is especially important because lately, it seems more people are struggling to keep their blood pressure in check.

Community health workers seem to have a special advantage. Because they’re often part of the community themselves, they can build trust and encourage people to stick with their treatment plans. This approach can be more affordable than relying solely on other healthcare professionals.

High blood pressure can be a sneaky health problem. It often doesn’t cause any noticeable issues, so people with other health concerns might not prioritize it during short doctor visits. This study aimed to find out which healthcare providers are most effective at helping patients manage their blood pressure and how to create the best strategies to tackle this important health concern.

Imagine you’re juggling several health issues. You might not think about high blood pressure unless it causes problems. This study is like looking for the best coaches to help people manage their blood pressure, even if it’s not the most pressing concern at the moment.
